Topsham assistant planner earns accolades

Carol Eyerman was named the Professional Planner of the Year when the Maine Association of Planners presented four awards at its annual meeting and conference on May 17 in Portland. 

According to a release from the association, Eyerman has devoted much of her career to the towns of Harpswell and Topsham, where she has served as assistant town planner.

Nominators commented on Eyerman’s “passion to oversee development,” serving as staff to multiple committees and assisting with historic preservation. She has served on multiple boards, most recently as president of the Maine Association of Planners. As president, Eyerman oversaw a restructure of the organization, working across state lines with Vermont and New Hampshire to form a closer affiliation with the Northern New England Chapter of the American Planning Association.

Brunswick woman new Midcoast CU supervisor 

Midcoast Federal Credit Union welcomed Chelsea Kershner as supervisor of the Brunswick branch. Kershner brings six years of diverse financial institution knowledge as well as seven years of leadership experience to her role. 

The credit union also named Kristen Poremby as its new senior vice president retail services. 

Norway Savings supports new Mt. A High School

Norway Savings has donated $10,000 toward the construction of the new Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham.

Serving the residents of Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Harpswell and Topsham, the new high school will be a state-of-the-art learning center with a modern, energy-efficient building designed for a 21st-century education.

While the approximately $59 million in construction expenses will be funded through state and local government, a fundraising subcommittee has set a goal of raising $500,000 to cover the costs of additional improvements to the new school not covered by state or local funds.

“We are happy to be able to support construction of the new Mt. Ararat High School,” said Pat Weigel, president and CEO of Norway Savings. “Every Maine student is entitled to a great education. With excellent school facilities, kids have a better chance at reaching their highest potential.”

“We are extremely pleased by the support of our communities, and especially Norway Savings Bank for their generous contribution to our efforts,” said John Hodge, chairman of the Building Committee. “Our new school will be a testament of what can happen when government, businesses and individual citizens work together.”

Midcoast officers graduate from criminal justice academy

Three officers from Midcoast police departments were among 63 recent graduates of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro.   

Ryan L. Kaake of the Bath Police Department, Joseph A. Hogan of the Brunswick department and Lara Sarett with Topsham police spent 18 weeks in study and training. Included were crime scene processing, emergency vehicle operation, first aid, traffic and criminal law, and handling domestic violence and sexual assault.

The graduation speaker was Maine Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck, who told the new officers, “You’ve entered a noble and honorable profession to keep our communities safe.  Maine law enforcement has many challenges,  but you have received the best training to protect the public, and to protect yourselves.”    

Maine Women Giving Tree announces grantees

The Maine Women’s Giving Tree was slated to award grants to the following organizations at its annual awards ceremony June 12 at Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick: Art Van, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Bath/Brunswick, Gathering Place, Growing to Give, Habitat for Humanity, Harpswell Aging at Home, Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program, Mid Coast Literacy, People Plus, Sweetser and Tedford Housing.
