United Way Community Builder award winners announced

United Way of Mid Coast Maine presented Community Builder Awards to a musically talented Bath woman, a group of dedicated church volunteers and a philanthropic local bank at its annual meeting May 23.

Martha Mayo was honored for the many years she’s spent sharing the joy of singing through community events, as well her work as a teacher and performance director at Morse High School, West Bath School and the Children’s Schoolhouse. She also was thanked for her leadership of Sagadahoc Preservation Inc. and Main Street Bath, including her work to save the Gateway paintings, by Jim Stilphen, and Hallet’s Clock.

“Martha’s energy and spirit can fill up a room – or a community,” United Way Executive Director Barbara Reinertsen said. “We’re very lucky to have her here in our community, and United Way is proud to present Martha Farrington Huotari Mayo with our Community Builder Award.”

Ecumenical Volunteers in the Damariscotta-Newcastle Area received the award for a group or initiative for the various projects volunteers had launched, including the Ecumenical Food Pantry, a homelessness prevention fund, Stepping Stone for affordable housing, the transportation service FISH and the Ecumenical Diaper Bank.

United Way Board Chairman Joel Wegner praised “this special group of church volunteers who have responded over many years to the needs they saw in their local communities.”

Bath Savings Institution and Bath Savings Trust received the award for a business or organization. According to Reinertsen, last year the bank contributed $635,000 to hundreds of nonprofit groups across the region and provided over 4,000 volunteer hours to nonprofit organizations.
