WOOLWICH — Four people were injured, one critically, in a four-vehicle crash Monday on Route 1 near the Taste of Maine restaurant in Woolwich.

A rental truck headed north “appears to have crossed the centerline, hitting a Subaru and then two others behind that vehicle,” Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Brett Strout said. The crash was reported at 6:50 a.m.

Barry Wyman, 57, of Woolwich, was listed in critical condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Strout said Monday afternoon.

Strout said a Penske cargo van driven by William Young, 55, of Topsham, was traveling north on Route 1 when it crossed the centerline and struck the southbound Subaru Forester driven by Wyman. Wyman had to be cut free of the Subaru, Woolwich Fire Chief Michael Demers said.

The van then hit two other Subarus traveling south behind Wyman. One was driven by Dorothy McCarren, 40, and the other by Jacob Schwartz, 38, both of Woolwich.

Young, McCarren and Schwartz all were taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, where they were treated and released Monday.

Traffic was diverted to Middle Road until Route 1 was reopened to traffic shortly after 10 a.m.

Strout said the crash is under investigation. The sheriff’s office is trying to determine why the Penske truck crossed the centerline.

Anyone with information about the crash should contact the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office at 207-443-9711.
