WELLS – Looking for something fun to do this weekend for the whole family? Head to Wells on Saturday to take part in the Wells HARBORFEST community festival put on by the town and its community partners.

Whether you feel like crabbing, building a sand castle, vying to be the Lobster Trap Toss World Champion, or just having a bite at one of the food trucks that will be there and taking it all in, there’s something for just about everyone at this free, family-friendly event overlooking the waterfront at Wells Harbor Community Park.

The event starts at 11 a.m. with the Kids Crabbing Activity, and all activities wind down at 4 p.m.

“The purpose of the event is to just have a family fun day right here in town,” said event organizer Cynthia Adamsky, who is the volunteer and events coordinator for the town of Wells.

This the sixth year for HARBORFEST, she said, and the first year the town has put it on solo, with the help of local sponsors. For the two years prior, Adamsky said, the town put on the festival with the help of the local Rotary Club, and the first three years the Rotary Club organized the event on its own.

She said the Rotary is still involved and will put on a cookout. That along with some food trucks and other vendors are about the only thing that will cost money at Saturday’s event.

In addition, there will be a fee for those who want to be a human soccer ball by playing bubble soccer.

The rest of the activities, like flying a drone, trying paddleboard, taking part in a pirate’s treasure hunt, playing in the kids play area, trying your skills in the junior firemen obstacle course and many more, are free. So is the entertainment with music by Project Pyramid and the Northern Exlposion Dancers.

“There’s so many things going on you just can’t get bored,” Adamsky said.

The biggest events of the day, which are also free, Adamsky said, included the Morse Hardware & Lumber’s Lumberman’s Challenge Obstacle Course, the Kids Crabbing Activity, Congdon’s Great Debacle Doughnut Eating Contest, and the Lobster Trap Toss World Championships. “No one else has a lobster trap toss,” she said.

Not only does the day promise to be lots of fun but it supports a good cause. All extra sponsorship funds will go to the Wells Parks and Recreation Department’s scholarship fund, Adamsky said. The fund pays for children to participate in Parks and Recreation activities whose families can’t afford to pay for the programs.

Wells HARBORFEST 2019 is free and open to all.
