BRUNSWICK – In a day full of tension over looming thunderstorms and tight races in each flight, the 2019 B&C Championship wrapped up with plenty of drama at Brunswick GC. Two of the four flights required extra holes to decide on a winner, and by days’ end four players went home with trophies for their solid play in their respective flights.
The B&C Championship features golfers with handicap indexes of 6.6 and higher, with the field broken into four even flights when entries close. This year’s event featured 77 golfers, with flights containing between 18 and 21 golfers.
In the Hogan flight, which features the lowest handicap players in the field, overnight leader Shawn Picard (Biddeford-Saco CC) was able to hold onto his lead and walk away with the win. He followed his opening 77 with a 78 for a score of 155 and a three-stroke victory over Jay Stone (The Woodlands Club). Stone had the round of the day in the second round, firing a 76 despite making a quintuple bogey 9 on the opening hole. He rallied with five birdies on the day to vault up the leaderboard into second place.
The Nicklaus flight had Bob Libby (Dutch Elm GC) get into his third playoff in the history of this event. Having tied with Ben Roberts (Cobbosee Colony GC) at the end of regulation with a score of 155, the two went to Brunswick’s 10th hole — the first hole used in this week’s tournament — where Libby prevailed with a bogey. This marks his third victory in the B&C Championship.
The Palmer flight saw a repeat winner from last year’s event, with John Allen (Gorham CC) walking away with the trophy. Following an opening 80, Allen shot 83 on day two for a total of 163. He squeaked out a one stroke victory over Paul Mayer (Willowdale GC) at 164.
Lastly, the Woods flight came down to the wire and ended in a playoff between two members from Purpoodock Club. After two rounds left Cameron Scott and Randall Richard tied at 180, the two headed to the 10th hole for a playoff to determine the winner. The duo traded bogeys up the first and headed to the 11th, where Scott made par to emerge as the flight winner.
