FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A Connecticut man rescued from a lake after he disappeared beneath the water has died.

Geovanny Tapia-Zuniga, of Bridgeport, was swimming at Lake Mohegan in Fairfield at about 6:45 p.m. Sunday when he went underwater.

Several people called 911 and when firefighters could not find the 33-year-old Tapia-Zuniga, a dive team was deployed and began a water rescue operation.

Police Dive Team Sgt. Jason Kline says Tapia-Zuniga was pulled unresponsive from the water and taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

One of the victim’s relatives was also taken to the hospital after being overcome with emotion.

Police say the drowning occurred outside the authorized swim area.
