HARTFORD, Conn. — A foundation in Connecticut says it’s committing $1 million to try to secure a 2020 presidential debate in Hartford.

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving said Monday it has committed $1 million to a local organizing committee in Hartford that’s working to cover the costs of a potential debate.

The foundation said it wants to help pay for a debate and associated activities to engage the public.

Hartford is among the six locations being considered by the Commission on Presidential Debates to host a 2020 general election debate. The other locations are all universities.

Hartford Foundation President Jay Williams said it’s important for the foundation to use its financial resources for inclusive and respectful civic education and engagement about the issues and challenges central to the 2020 presidential campaign.
