Barbara Ann (Vigue) Burns

BATH – Barbara Ann (Vigue) Burns, 97, passed away on Oct. 20, 2019 at Mid-Coast Hospital surrounded by her loving family. The daughter of Edward Vigue and Emma (Gauvin) Vigue, Barbara was born on May 12, 1922 in Manchester, N.H. Her family moved to her beloved Bath when she was a baby.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Wilfrid Guerin, second husband, George H. Burns; three sons, Michael and Marc Guerin and George P. Burns; and two brothers, Martin and David Dexter Vigue.
She is survived by her three sisters, Gabrielle Lewis of Lexington, Va. and Genesta Pouliot of Bath; and her children, Stephanie Guerin Batterman (Dean), Barbara Peters (Michael), Elizabeth McDorr and Amy Burns. Barbara is also survived by 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.
Barbara worked for many years in the State of Maine Education Department in Augusta. In retirement she was part of the grandparent program at Jordan Acres School in Brunswick where she spent many happy hours reading to children. She often told the story of the little boy who seemed so fascinated by her story-telling that he could not take his eyes off her face. After the story ended, he said to her, “Do you know your face is all crinkled?” “So much for my story-telling ability.” She would laugh.
Barbara was well known for her wisdom. For many years her home welcomed people seeking her advice on matters from child-rearing to faith. She was an avid reader and loved spending time with her daily crossword puzzles. She had a passion for English history and could name all the wives of Henry VII as well as the fate of each one. Her catholic faith was her dearest possession and she died believing that she was, in fact, being “born to eternal life”.
She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The family is grateful to the staff at the Plant Memorial Home for their loving care of their mother in her last years.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Lincoln Street, Bath on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at 11 a.m.
