BRUNSWICK — Sophia Lemmer scored four minutes into overtime as the Bowdoin College women’s soccer team earned the upset 2-1 overtime win over Williams on Saturday.

The Polar Bears (7-6-1, 3-5-1 NESCAC) forced overtime with a successful penalty kick in the final two minutes of regulations. The win was the program’s first over the Ephs (8-4-1, 6-3-0 NESCAC) since 2005.

With five minutes remaining in the first half, Mikayla Kappes broke through the Bowdoin defense. Bowdoin goaltender Penny Rocchio came out to the left corner of the box and made a diving save to deflect Kappes shot wide.

The Ephs controlled the second half, outshooting the Polar Bears, 12-5, and they finally broke through in the 82nd minute. After making a pair of quick saves on Williams’ bids, Rocchio was unable to deny a third attempt as Aspen Pierson gave the visitors a late 1-0 lead.

Aine Lawlor sent the game into overtime with a successful penalty kick conversation with 1:37 remaining in regulation.

Alison Lu nearly gave Williams the win two minutes into overtime, but the shot collided with the crossbar.

Bowdoin answered two minutes later. Rachael Peacock took a corner kick from the right side and sent the ball into the box. Lemmer settled the ball and made a move around a defender before sneaking a shot inside the right post.

Williams owned a 17-9 edge in shots and 5-2 corner kick advantage. Chelsea Taylor made five saves. Rocchio made six stops for Bowdoin.

The Polar Bears play at Tufts at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Field hockey

Elizabeth Growney scored less than a minute into the fourth quarter to lift Bowdoin to 1-0 win over visiting Williams.

The fourth-ranked Polar Bears and seventh-ranked Ephs came into the contest with identical 7-1 marks in NESCAC play. Bowdoin jumped to 13-1 (8-1 NESCAC), while handing Williams (11-2, 7-2 NESCAC) its second setback of the season.

Bowdoin controlled the opening quarter, taking four shots and earning a pair of corners while allowing no opportunities to Williams. 

The teams played a back-and-forth midfield battle in the second, with the Ephs recording the only shot of the frame.

Williams applied pressure in the third, pinning the Polar Bears in their defensive zone for the majority of the quarter. The Ephs tallied three shots and four corners while denying the Polar Bears any looks.

With under two minutes remaining in the third, Bowdoin keeper Maddie Ferrucci made a sprawling save to her right post to deny Emma Ticknor.

Growney came up with the game-winning goal just 41 seconds into the final quarter. Kara Finnerty carried deep into the left corner of Williams territory and sent a long cross to the far post where Growney deflected the ball in.

Ferrucci preserved the lead with another sprawling play with under a minute remaining. Ticknor carried in from the low left side and crossed to Claire Fitzpatrick at the far post. Ferrucci laid out to simultaneously cut off the pass and stop Fitzpatrick.

Williams held a slight 7-6 edge in shots and 4-2 corner advantage. Ferrucci ended the day with five saves and the shutout. Abby Lloyd made four stops for Williams.

The Polar Bears travel to Medford on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. clash with Tufts.

Men’s soccer

Bowdoin suffered a 2-0 loss at home to Williams. 

The Polar Bears fell to 6-4-4 (1-4-4 NESCAC). The Ephs improved to 7-3-4 (5-2-2 NESCAC).

Williams took the lead at 8:58 off a tally from Chris Fleischer, who cut to the middle at the top of the box and lofted a ball to the top right corner. 

Jake Saudek won the ball off a Bowdoin defender late in the half and doubled the Ephs’ lead. Saudek skimmed a ball inside the post and past the charging keeper.

Bowdoin nearly answered two minutes later as Brian Bae fed Ian Strudwick, but the shot was turned away.

Both teams totaled nine shots. Bowdoin held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Michael Webber made four saves for Bowdoin and Michael Davis also made four for Williams.

The Polar Bears play at Tufts on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Women’s volleyball

Cori Gray had a career-high 19 kills as the Polar Bears fended off Middlebury in a 3-1 victory Friday evening.

The Polar Bears took the win by set scores of 25-20, 26-24, 24-26, 25-19.

Gray notched six blocks in a dominating performance at the net for the Polar Bears. Caroline Flaharty added 15 kills and eight digs, while Sophia Pahl had nine kills and 12 digs. Ella Haugen totaled 36 assists with 12 digs for Bowdoin, and Emily King led the Polar Bears with 26 digs on the night.

On Saturday at Amherst, Bowdoin made it 10 straight wins with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-13) victory. 

The Polar Bears are 14-6, 6-2 in the NESCAC. 

Gray led the way again, totaling nine kills and seven blocks. Pahl picked up seven kills and seven digs, with Emily King leading with 23 digs. 

Bowdoin closes the regular season on Friday (home vs. Colby) and Saturday (home vs. Bates). 

Football

Middlebury  jumped to a 21-point lead in the first quarter and remained unbeaten with a 47-29 victory over Bowdoin on Saturday.

The Panthers, who improved to 7-0, gave head coach Bob Ritter his 100th career victory. The Polar Bears remained winless at 0-7 on the season.

Nate Richam-Odoi led Bowdoin with 105 yards on the ground. He also hauled in two passes for 53 yards and picked up two touchdowns. Austin McCrum completed 13-of-18 passes for 146 yards and two scores. Max Freedman led with four receptions and his first collegiate touchdown. 

Bowdoin heads to Bates (0-7) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. 

Cross country

Bowdoin swept the Bowdoin Invitational II event on Saturday in Brunswick. 

The Polar Bear men placed first in a five-team field, totaling 31 points to edge Bates (34) for the top spot. The Bowdoin women cruised in their four-team meet, placing the top 10 runners to take the victory.

Andrew Meredith was the top Bowdoin finisher in the men’s race, taking second in a time of 26:33. Aidan King was fifth in 27:07.7. 

Delaney Bullock and Caroline Shipley finished 1-2, respectively, in the women’s race for Bowdoin. Bullock completed the 5K course in 23:13.4, with Shipley next in 23:13.5. 

Bowdoin competes in the NESCAC Championships this upcoming Saturday at William College.

Women’s rugby

Bowdoin earned a hard-fought road win at the University of New England on Saturday afternoon, 27-12.

The Polar Bears improved to 6-2 and secured the No. 2 seed and a NIRA D-3 semifinal home game on Nov. 9.

Bowdoin finished with five tries and one conversion, with the defense of Ashlynn Autrey and Catherine Patti leading the way. 

The Polar Bears visit West Chester this upcoming Saturday at 11 a.m.
