King graduates as NYA royalty, as he not only led the Panthers to their best season in nearly a generation, but along the way, he became the program’s all-time leading scorer, doing it all with a smile.

An imposing post standout who was also comfortable handling the ball and shooting from the outside, King made his presence felt immediately, averaging 13.9 points and 9.1 rebounds per contest in an all-star season as a freshman. As a sophomore, King was even better, averaging 23 points and 13 boards. As a junior, King continued to light it up as he helped the Panthers make it to the playoffs after a year away. King averaged a league-leading 24.2 points and 14.2 rebounds per contest, placed second in steals (3.0 per game) and also dished out 2.6 assists per game.

This winter, NYA won 14 games in the regular season, its best mark in 15 years, and got to the Class C South semifinals for the second time in three years and King’s dominance was a big reason why. He wound up third in the Western Maine Conference in scoring (21 points per game), led the league in rebounds (12.6) and was second in steals (3.1).

Highlights included 29 points and 16 rebounds in a win over Sacopee Valley, 19 points in a victory over Buckfield, 16 points and 12 rebounds in a win over A.R. Gould, 24 points in a victory over St. Dom’s, 21 points, 12 rebounds and four steals in a second win over St. Dom’s, 26 points, 12 rebounds and four steals in a second victory over Buckfield and 20 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Seacoast Christian.

Then came the night of Jan. 28, when King had 27 points, 14 rebounds and four assists as NYA edged Traip Academy and King became the program’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing Tim Deluca.

King closed the regular season by posting 27 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Temple Academy, 19 points in a victory over Seacoast Christian, 31 points and 20 boards in a win over Old Orchard Beach and 19 points, 12 rebounds and six steals in a victory over Sacopee Valley.

King then took his show to Augusta and in the Class C South quarterfinals, he went off for 34 points, 14 rebounds and blocked two shots as the Panthers defeated Richmond. King got in foul trouble and only had one point in the semifinals, as NYA was eliminated by eventual state champion Winthrop, but he’ll graduate as the program’s new standard-bearer with 1,535 points and 916 rebounds.

“Twenty points and 12 rebounds per game for a career doesn’t come around often,” said NYA coach Jason Knight. “That’s a result of (Te’Andre’s) hard work and dedication, but considering he was consistently the focus of opposing defenses, it makes his many accomplishments even more impressive.”

Te’Andre King, North Yarmouth Academy’s Winter Male Athlete of the Year, was one of the special players to come our way in recent years and with several colleges interested in his services, it’s safe to say we haven’t heard the last of his brilliance.

Coach Jason Knight’s comment: “Te’Andre was obviously central to the team’s success this year and certainly for his entire career. While his on-court play was important and will be a challenge to replace, his personality, sense of humor and team-focused leadership were equally valuable. He took great pride and enjoyment in seeing his teammates grow and have success this year and for them to experience the tournament. It’s been a pleasure to watch Te’Andre grow as a player and a person. I’m certainly appreciative of everything he’s done in an NYA uniform, individually and for the program, but I am also looking forward to seeing what he does in the next chapter.”

Female:

LAUREN POWERS, Sophomore—Hockey

Powers wasn’t just the Panthers’ last line of defense this season, she also sparked them to a competitive season and set the stage for even more excellence down the road.

Powers played 20 games and NYA won eight of them. On three occasions, she shut out the opposition and had a stellar goals-against-average of 2.29. She was named the team’s most valuable player and helped the Panthers hold their own against many of the top prep programs in New England.

Lauren Powers, North Yarmouth Academy’s Winter Female Athlete of the Year, has earned the reputation as one of the top goalies in New England. Keep an eye on her the next two years, as she’s only just begun to excel.

Coach Pavel Navrat’s comment: “Lauren’s great. Building a competitive program in prep hockey requires strong building blocks and Lauren is a building block for NYA. She has great size, she is technically sound and mentally strong to compete on daily basis in a top league. Lauren made the USA Hockey National Team Camp last summer and brought that experience into this season at NYA. Her strong work ethic, team-first attitude and reliability on and off the ice make her a model student-athlete. Lauren is a coach’s dream, a great player, an even a better teammate, top student, coachable, humble and competitive. Lauren is getting better every day and we’re excited for her to be a leader, role model and a dominant force at NYA for the next two years.”
