PORTLAND — The Portland school district is still months away from unveiling policies on how school officials and law enforcement will interact in the absence of school resource officers.

The district has 13 policies now that outline the relationship between schools and the Portland Police Department regarding bomb threats, drug and alcohol use, firearms or weapons possession, and questioning and searches, for example.

The public will have a chance to weigh in on what those policies will be moving forward at a virtual session with the school board at 6 p.m. Feb. 24. Information on how to access the online session will be sent to parents and posted on the district’s website.

“It’s not about should we have school resource officers or not,” Assistant Superintendent Aaron Townsend said. “That decision has been made. It’s about creating guidance for policy changes.”

Townsend expects the school board will vote on the new policies in the spring, and that they will be in place for the 2021-22 school year. Until them the current policies remain in effect.
