Edward J. Smith

SACO – Edward “Smitty” Smith, 89, of Saco, passed away on Sunday, Jan 31, 2021, at Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on Feb. 8, 1931, a son of Edward Sr. and Agnes (McHugh) Smith. He served his country in the United States Marines.Smitty grew up in Maspeth, N.Y., a residential community in the borough of Queens. He moved to Saco, then Old Orchard Beach in the 1960’s. He was employed as a food broker for many years, most recently for Acosta Food Service. He married his wife Patricia on April 12, 1986. Smitty had many interesting hobbies. He enjoyed the theatre. He found great joy in acting and singing for the Biddeford City Theatre. He also liked to go out dancing, especially with his wife Pat. Smitty was in his element when he was around people. He had a great sense of humor and always had a joke. Smitty also had a quiet side, listening to music, Luciano Pavarotti was his favorite, and watching old movies. Sports were another of his pastimes, following the Bruins, Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Patricia (Blow) Smith; his children Gary Smith and his wife Carol, Karen Simone and her husband Michael, Cindy Smith and Kathryn Smith. He is also survived by his grandchildren Kyle, Lauren, Deanna, Vincent, Anthony and Cedar. A public graveside service with military honors will be held in the spring at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco.
