A Pennsylvania man died of an apparent heart attack Thursday afternoon while snowmobiling with his wife on Pleasant Pond in Caratunk.

Mark Schaub, 62, died shortly after noon after Deputy Brian Crater of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, who is also an emergency medical technician and lives in Caratunk, rushed to the scene and tried to revive him using an automatic external defibrillator, or AED, according to Chief Deputy Michael Mitchell.

“(Schaub) had a camp on Pleasant Pond,” Mitchell said. “He and his wife were on the snowmobile together and it appears he had a heart attack. Deputy Crater is investigating it, obviously. He’s also an EMT and he used an AED to see if he could revive him, four times. It wasn’t successful.”

The Sheriff’s Department was notified of the incident at 12:08 p.m., according to Mitchell, who said it appeared Schaub had suffered the heart attack while riding his snowmobile and fell off when the machine stopped.

After Crater got to the scene and worked on Schaub, rescue workers from Upper Kennebec Valley Ambulance, based in Bingham, also arrived and attempted to revive Schaub, according to Mitchell.

With a population of about 70, Caratunk is a small town about 54 miles northwest of Skowhegan, off U.S. Route 201. It is about 39 miles southeast of Jackman.

Mitchell said he did not know Schaub’s wife’s name.
