SACO – Sweetser was one of two Maine organizations to receive funding to support mental health and substance use programs, according to U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King. The funds were awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Center for Mental Health Services.

Saco-based Sweetser was awarded $2.9 million; Community Health and Counseling Services in Bangor, $3.2 million.

“No community is immune from these heartbreaking disorders that have taken a toll on far too many of our peers, friends, and neighbors,” Collins and King said in a joint statement. “This important funding will give Mainers who are struggling with mental health and substance use disorders access to the treatment programs they need to achieve recovery and healing.”

The senators said the funding will support accessible mental health programs, improve outreach and case management programs, and ensure that scientifically-established findings and practice-based knowledge are applied in preventing and treating mental health and substance use disorders.
