Falmouth temporarily closed its town-owned trails to the public on March 22.

The town annually closes the trail system for several weeks “to ensure that the integrity of the trails is not compromised during the rain and mud season in Maine,” according to a statement on the town’s website. The closure applies to all trails managed by the town except for Pine Grove Preserve. The trails will be reopened once conditions improve, officials said.

“We understand the desire to get outside and stay active. However, this time of year the trails are particularly fragile. Please respect this closure so that trails can be reopened in good shape and ready to use,” the statement read.

All trailheads, which are monitored for noncompliance, will be cordoned off and signage will be posted. Officials suggested residents check access at Mackworth Island State Park, Maine Audubon and the Falmouth Land Trust.
