I will be frank that being in the presence of civilians who are carrying firearms while in a public space makes me feel unsafe. Faced with such a display of firearms in the voting place would keep me from doing my constitutional duty of voting, thus negating my ability to practice my right to freedom of speech in the voting booth.
Although many who carry guns into public spaces say that they need them for self-defense, the reality is that only 1.2 percent actually use them for this purpose. Power and intimidation are more likely the reason in our divisive environment.
When I am carrying out my constitutional duty to vote, I should have a right to do so in a safe and secure environment. All municipalities should have the right to provide the most secure and safe environment for voting. Sen. Cathy Breen is sponsoring L.D. 805, which would give municipalities the ability to prohibit firearms at voting places. I hope our legislators will support this important piece of legislation.
