According to Wikipedia, Federal Project One of the WPA at one point employed 40,000 artists, musicians, writers, actors and historians. “The WPA’s Division of Investigation proved so effective in preventing political corruption ‘that a later congressional investigation couldn’t find a single serious irregularity it had overlooked,’ wrote economist Paul Krugman.”
