South Portland Deputy Police Chief Amy Berry has been sworn in as the city’s interim police chief, city officials said in a statement.

Berry, who has served as deputy chief since 2001, was promoted to the top post April 14.

Berry has been with the department since 1977. She has a Master of Science in Business degree from Husson University and graduated from the FBI National Academy. She has also served as a member and past chairperson of the board of trustees for the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

Berry will serve as interim chief until the city can find a successor for former Chief Tim Sheehan, who submitted his resignation on March 17.
