Ret. Navy Chief Lawrence “Larry” Pennell

YARMOUTH – Ret. Navy Chief Lawrence “Larry” Pennell, 98, of Yarmouth, passed away on April 25, 2021. Born on Oct. 28, 1922 in Portland, he was the son of Sumner L. and Elsie P. Baker Pennell. He attended Portland and South Portland Schools. He married Hester M. Dyer in 1945.

Larry joined the Navy on Dec. 18, 1939. He served on submarines, destroyers, and in counterintelligence and retired after 25 years.

During the Vietnam War, he worked for the American Red Cross in Korea, Hawaii, New Hampshire and the Panama Canal.

As a civilian, Larry worked for American Hoist and Derrick in Portland as an industrial insurance manager.

Larry was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed family get togethers. His wife, Hester, predeceased him in 2002.

He is survived by his daughter, Carole S. Christl of Canton; nephews, Richard F. Dyer of Hartford, Donald M. Dyer of Limington, and Andrew Lucas of Phoenix, Ariz. and a niece, Wendy Lucas of Virginia Beach, Va.

A graveside service at Riverside Cemetery in Cornish will take place later this summer.
