Winifred Mason

OGUNQUIT – Winifred Mason, 97 years old, died Tuesday May 4, 2021 at her home in Ogunquit surrounded by family. Wini was born in Boston on Nov. 2, 1923, daughter of Isadore and Hannah (Dopkeen) Rubin. After graduating from Brookline High School, she attended Simmons College then received a Masters in Social Work there. While at Simmons she honed her skills in Bridge and met the love of her life, Paul Mason, whom she married in 1944. While Paul was overseas during WWII, Wini worked at the Framingham Reformatory for Women and took great pleasure in sending him letters with that institution as her return address. She eventually went to work at the Childrens Mission to Children, an agency affiliated with Boston Childrens Hospital. She was an expert in child abuse and neglect, and authored a training manual that was widely used for years. That agency eventually became Parents and Children’s Services and she served as its Assistant Director until her retirement. She was instrumental in developing the Parental Stress Hotline and an innovative daycare program for abused children there.Always the advocate for social justice, she was an activist for liberal causes wherever she lived. She was President of the Brookline Council for Public Schools and involved in starting the METCO program which brought students to Brookline and other local communities. She was an elected Town Meeting Member for a number of years and was active in Democratic politics. Wini and Paul both spent summers in Ogunquit as children and built a cottage there in 1956. They renovated the house and moved there permanently in the early 90s. Wini immediately immersed herself in many community activities. She and Paul were early supporters of the Ogunquit Heritage Museum and the Beach Plum Land Trust. They were among the founders of the Senior Center in Wells. She also served as the Treasurer of the Ogunquit Performing Arts Committee and was an active member of Seacoast Democrats.Wini was predeceased by her brother Donald Rubin; and her beloved husband of 75 years, Paul E.
