GORHAM — Kirsten Pelletier and Alexis Brown each pitched a three-hitter, and Southern Maine clinched the No. 1 seed in the Little East Conference softball tournament by sweeping a doubleheader Saturday against Plymouth State, winning 9-0 and 4-2.

Ashley Tinsman paced the Game 1 offense in support of Pelletier (12-0), going 3 for 5 with two doubles and four RBI.

In Game 2, USM (29-2-1, 15-1 Little East) erased a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the fourth inning. Madison Day tied it with a two-run double, then scored on a single by Hannah Shields.

Samantha Hauck added a home run in the seventh.

ALBANY SWEEPS MAINE: The Great Danes (22-17, 12-6 America East) scored twice on errors in the top of the eighth inning and completed a doubleheader sweep with a 2-0 win over the Black Bears (11-22, 7-11) in Orono.

Wendi Hammond pitched a five-hitter for Albany. Kyleigh O’Donnell took the loss despite allowing just four hits.

In Game 1, Caitlyn Mitros capped a five-run fourth with an inside-the-park grand slam, propelling Albany to an 8-3 victory.

BOWDOIN, TRINITY SPLIT: Lilly Armstrong had two hits and four RBI, Maddie Rouhana hit a two-run homer and Katryna Dukehart added a solo homer to power Bowdoin (5-7) to a 14-7 win over Trinity (5-10) in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Brunswick.

Rouhana and Dukehart each finished with three hits.

In Game 1, Alex Chambers had three hits and two RBI for Trinity in a 3-0 victory.

BASEBALL

USM SWEEPS CASTLETON: Tom Vesosky went 5 for 5 and doubled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, and Andrew Hillier added a home run and four RBI as Southern Maine (27-8) finished a doubleheader sweep with a 9-5 win over Castleton (9-21), in Gorham.

Janek Luksza also drove in two runs for USM, which ended the regular season with a 12-game winning streak.

In Game 1, freshman Cam Seymour hit his 11th home run of the season and finished with three RBI in an 8-1 victory.

Ben Lambert and Gavin Arsenault combined on a five-hitter. Lambert (5-1) struck out nine in five innings.

MAINE SPLITS WITH UMASS LOWELL: Jeff Mejia’s two-run single capped a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh as Maine (16-14, 11-12 Hockey East) earned a 3-2 win over the River Hawks (13-24, 12-16) in a doubleheader opener in Orono.

The Black Bears were held to two hits through the first six innings, but Maine loaded the bases in the seventh with two walks and an infield single by Ryan Turenne. Colin Plante drew another walk to force in a run, and Mejia ended the game with a single to right.

Nick Sinacola (8-1) extended his streak of double-digit strikeout games to nine, fanning 11 while allowing six hits.

In Game 2, Keagan Calero hit a go-ahead two-run single in the seventh inning as the River Hawks rallied for a 6-4 win.

Sean Lawlor tripled with two men aboard in the fifth to give Maine a 4-2 lead.

COLBY 9, BATES 1: Cabot Maher homered twice and added an RBI double, leading the Mules (11-10) past the Bobcats (1-6) in Waterville.

Maher broke a 1-1 tie with a home run in the fourth inning, then struck again in sixth to make it 3-1. Colby pulled away with six runs in the eighth, aided by Cole Palmeri’s two-run double and Henry Suarez’s RBI triple.

Colin Coyne gave Bates a short-lived lead with a home run in the third inning.
