Reconstruction of Somerset Street in Portland, a joint project of the Portland Department of Public Works and Maine Department of Transportation, begins Monday, May 17.

Work involves constructing new intersection at Elm and Somerset streets; reconfiguring the intersection with Preble, Somerset, Kennebec Street and Alder streets; installing sidewalks on both sides of Somerset/Kennebec Street from Elm Street to Hanover Street; installing pedestrian lighting; paving Somerset/Kennebec Street from Elm to Hanover Street; and reconstructing the parking lots at 137 Kennebec St.

The project is expected to be completed within a four-month period and motorists are advised to seek an alternate route.
