The South Portland Fire Department will hold a ceremony Tuesday to unveil the new $7.5 million station at Cash Corner.

The new fire station on Route 1 replaces a 1970s-era structure that was torn down in 2020 after the city determined it would be too expensive to repair and expand.

The 17,000-square-foot building provides enough space for the minimum of three full-time firefighters on duty at all times. There are a total of 10 bedrooms available to accommodate call firefighters who might be stationed there, and any new full-time firefighters to be assigned in the future.

The station has indoor training space and holds two ladder trucks, two standard fire trucks, an ambulance and other equipment now stored elsewhere in the city.
