If you blinked, you might have missed it.

The long-awaited, highly anticipated spring sports season is already halfway finished and there is still plenty of drama, and hopefully even better weather, yet to come.

Here’s a glimpse of where things stand at the midway point:

Baseball

Freeport’s baseball team hit the midway point at a perfect 8-0 after wins last week at Brunswick (5-1) and at home over Morse (12-6). Against the Dragons, Nate Abbott earned the victory, while Kempton Von Glinsky-Gregoire, Gus Wing and Zane Aguiar all had multiple hits. In the win over the Shipbuilders, Anthony Panciocco had three hits and scored three runs and Abbott had three hits and three runs batted it. The Falcons host Lake Region Friday and welcome Yarmouth Tuesday of next week.

Greely improved to 4-2 Saturday after blanking visiting Brunswick, 3-0, as Zach Johnston’s first varsity start resulted in a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts. Cooper Neleski and Brooks Williams each had RBI hits. The Rangers were at Mt. Ararat Tuesday, host Morse Monday of next week, then welcome longtime rival Cape Elizabeth Tuesday of next week.

Yarmouth improved to 5-2 after a 4-2 win at Wells last week. Will Dickinson earned the victory, allowing four hits while strikeout nine batters, while Jake Gautreau had a two-run single and Cam Merrill and Matt Robichaud hit RBI doubles. The Clippers hosted Cape Elizabeth Tuesday, go to Cape Elizabeth for two games Friday (see pressherald.com/forecaster-sports/ for game story) and have a key test at Freeport Tuesday of next week.

Falmouth won its first five games under new coach Mike D’Andrea, then lost a pair of contests last week, 9-3 at home to reigning Class A champion Scarborough and 2-0 at South Portland. Against the Red Storm, Brady Coyne, Patrick Gill and Sam Kidder all had multiple hits, but four errors proved to be too much to overcome.

“It was fun to have a nice, intense game,” D’Andrea said. “Scarborough’s a really good team. I have a lot of respect for those kids and the way they play baseball. I’m very pleased with the way we competed today. We made some physical errors on the field and that will happen, but we put up nine hits and I’m happy with that.”

Falmouth managed just one hit against the Red Riots. Falmouth was home with Thornton Academy Tuesday and welcomes Windham next Tuesday.

The Waynflete/North Yarmouth Academy co-op squad was 4-2 at press time after splitting a doubleheader against visiting Sacopee Valley Saturday. After dropping the opener, 3-1, Waynflete/NYA took the nightcap, 6-5. In the victory, Luke Josephson had four hits and Anders Jonsson’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh won it. Waynflete/NYA hosted Berwick Academy Tuesday, visits Richmond Friday and welcomes St. Dom’s Tuesday of next week.

Softball

Greely’s softball team fell to 2-3 after a wild 13-12 home loss to Brunswick Saturday. The Rangers rallied from a 9-2 deficit, but gave up two runs in the top of the seventh before having the potential tying run thrown out at home in the bottom half. Hailey Stewart had a pair of hits. After going to Mt. Ararat Tuesday, Greely is home versus Cape Elizabeth next Tuesday.

Yarmouth dropped to 0-4 after a 14-1 (six-inning) loss to Mt. Ararat Monday. The Clippers hosted undefeated Cape Elizabeth Tuesday, go to the Capers for a doubleheader Friday, then visit Brunswick Monday of next week and play at Freeport the following day.

Freeport fell to 0-8 after recent losses at Brunswick (15-1, in five innings) and at home to Morse (12-0). The Falcons host Lake Region Friday and play host to Yarmouth Tuesday of next week.

Falmouth was 2-6 at press time following a doubleheader split against visiting Portland, losing the opener, 15-2, and winning the nightcap, 8-5, and a 15-0 (five-inning) home loss to three-time reigning Class A champion Scarborough. In the victory, Falmouth built an 8-0 lead and held on, as Olivia Rogers had three hits, Eve Chase hit a home run and Cam Birks went the distance on the mound. Falmouth hosts Thornton Academy Wednesday and visits Deering Friday.

NYA takes a 2-0 record into Friday’s home game versus Richmond. The Panthers are at Sacopee Valley Monday and welcome St. Dom’s Tuesday of next week.

Boys’ lacrosse

Falmouth’s boys’ lacrosse team took a 5-0 mark into Tuesday night’s showdown at two-time reigning Class A champion Thornton Academy (see pressherald.com/forecaster-sports/ for game story). Last week, Falmouth survived visiting Scarborough in overtime, 10-9, then defeated visiting South Portland, 14-2. Against the Red Storm, Wyatt Kerr’s third goal was the difference. Satchel Kaplan also had three goals and goalie Drew Noyes made 11 saves.

“It was a very good game,” Kerr said. “We were expecting a close game. (Scarborough’s) a very good team. We look forward to playing them again because this was a really fun game.”

“We just hit the reset button,” Falmouth coach Dave Barton said. “This is a passionate group and you can feel them trying to do too much. I just told them to focus. We’ve seen Scarborough play a couple times this year. They’re loaded with great seniors who have taken their lumps through the years and I fully expected them to be strong. We just let the players play.”

Falmouth got four more goals from Kerr and three from Rory Skillin-Lanou in the win over the Red Riots. Falmouth visits Windham next Tuesday.

Greely lost its first two games, but turned around and won four games in six days, defeating host Freeport (14-4), host Yarmouth (7-5), visiting NYA in a double-overtime marathon (8-7) and host Gray-New Gloucester (10-2). Shaun Downing had four goals and D.J. Kenney three against the Falcons. In the win over the Panthers, Chase Cornwall scored his second goal of the game late in the second OT, while Elias Leggat-Barr also had two goals and Charter Sasseville won 18 of 19 faceoffs.

“We expected it to be tough and we were ready,” Cornwall said. “We had fun and gave it our all and eventually took the win.”

“I knew the offense would get one,” Sasseville said. “They were struggling, but they kept fighting.”

“Part of it was remaining calm, but the main thing for us was to keep working hard,” Rangers coach Michael Storey added. “NYA’s a very tough team to outwork. They kept grinding. All credit to them. They gave us everything we could handle and more. Some days the ball bounces your way. I’ve certainly had them not bounce my way.”

Greely hosted undefeated Cape Elizabeth Wednesday and visits Gorham Monday of next week.

“We have a long ways to go, but we’re building,” Storey said. “We focus on the next thing and the next game. It’s nice to see the growth of this team. I hope we can grow even more the next month.”

Yarmouth edged visiting Brunswick, 11-9, last week, then fell to 3-3 after home losses to Greely (7-5) and Waynflete (6-5). The Clippers looked to return to the win column Tuesday at Freeport, then host Cape Elizabeth Friday.

Reigning Class C champion NYA was 4-2 at press time after a 17-4 home win over Mt. Ararat and an 8-7 double-overtime loss at Greely. In the victory, Chas Rohde scored four times, while Chris Hamblett and Brayden Warde scored three goals apiece. In the loss, the Panthers got two goals apiece from Warde and Caleb Waterman and had their chances to steal a victory against a top Class B contender, but fell just short.

“The message we’re trying to get these guys to understand is that we’re as good as the top Class B teams,” NYA coach Peter Gerrity said. “We showed that today and we hoped to get a bounce go our way at the end. Turnovers didn’t help and their faceoff guy was excellent. We got guys stuck on the field because they’d win the faceoff and they were pretty good as possessing the ball too, so we had to wait until they turned it over.”

The Panthers host Gray-New Gloucester Wednesday and welcome Gardiner Monday.

“Things are going well,” Gerrity said. “We need to stay healthy. We have just one game next week and that will help us regroup.”

Freeport fell to 0-4 after recent home losses to Greely (14-4) and Maranacook (7-6). The Falcons hosted Yarmouth Tuesday, go to Cheverus Friday and visit Cape Elizabeth Monday.

Girls’ lacrosse

Yarmouth’s girls’ lacrosse team is now 4-1 after a 13-6 home win over Greely last week and Monday’s 13-8 triumph at Class A contender Massabesic. Against the Rangers, in the rain, in the Clippers’ first home game of the season, Katelyn D’Appolonia had four goals, while Annie Lowenstein and Aine Powers added three apiece. Anna Thornton won 13 of 14 draws.

“It was exciting to be home again,” Thornton said. “We’ve worked super hard. We’ve come out strong and it’s exciting.”

“YG lax loves the rain,” D’Appolonia said. “That’s our motto. It’s just fun. It’s scrappy and we get to play like we play. This team’s awesome.”

“I told the girls to savor the moment being at home,” added longtime Clippers coach Dorothy Holt. “It felt so good to finally be here. We love the rain.”

In the win over the Mustangs, D’Appolonia and Lowenstein scored four goals apiece. Yarmouth hosts Brunswick Friday, then has a huge home showdown Tuesday of next week versus two-time reigning Class A champion Falmouth.

Falmouth hit the midway point with a record of 5-1 after Friday’s hard-fought 5-3 home win over Thornton Academy. Eva Clement led the way with three goals and C.C. Cohen scored her first varsity goal. Falmouth welcomes Cape Elizabeth Wednesday and goes to Yarmouth Tuesday of next week.

Greely lost last week at Yarmouth, 13-6, then snapped a two-game skid and improved to 3-2 Saturday with an emphatic 19-1 win at Brunswick. In the setback, Elsa Dean-Muncie scored two goals, but the Rangers couldn’t get enough possession to hang with the prolific Clippers.

“We just have to put it together for 50 minutes,” Greely coach Becca Koelker said. “We couldn’t get possession on the draws or keep possession down the field. We couldn’t win draws and we were playing from behind. Yarmouth’s so good. We gave them a lot of second chances when they were on attack. Getting ground balls and getting the ball out is huge.”

In the victory, Carley Ferentz had six goals and three assists, while Charlotte Taylor scored four times and Dean-Muncie added three goals and three assists.

The Rangers have a key home showdown versus Scarborough Wednesday (see pressherald.com/forecaster-sports/ for game story) and go to Lake Region Saturday.

“Our attack is starting to come together,” Koelker said. “We just have to put pieces together and find our rhythm. (Playing the best teams) is how we like it. We like having really challenging games.”

Freeport improved to 4-0 with recent wins at Gray-New Gloucester (18-5), Maranacook (9-4) and Lake Region (11-9). In the victory over the Patriots, Savannah Tracy scored four goals, while Meredith Feller and Ellie Whittier each added three. Against the Black Bears, Meghan Driscoll scored four times, while Kate Tracy added three goals. In the win over the Lakers, Driscoll, Kate Tracy and Savannah Tracy all had three goals. The Falcons host St. Dom’s Wednesday and welcome two-time reigning Class B champion Cape Elizabeth Saturday (see pressherald.com/forecaster-sports/ for game story).

NYA was 4-2 at press time after sandwiching wins at Mt. Ararat (10-5) and at home over Wells (14-6) around a 10-7 loss at Lake Region. Vy Tran scored three times against the Eagles. In the loss, Maggie Holt scored three goals. Holt then had five goals in the win over the Warriors. The Panthers visit Cheverus Wednesday and play host to Freeport Monday and Gray-New Gloucester Tuesday of next week.

Tennis

The qualifying rounds of the state singles tennis tournament were held last weekend.

Yarmouth’s Sofia Mavor (the top seed), Falmouth’s Ella Holland, Nina Woodbury and Gracyn Mick and Greely’s Emma Lindsay, Luna Smith-Mejia and Mia Nettland all advanced on the girls’ side, while Greely’s Leif Boddie (the top seed) and Peter Rinehart, Falmouth’s Aiden Hendry, NYA’s Noah Silander and Yarmouth’s Will Best, Andi Cobaj and Asher Lockwood advanced in the boys’ competition.

Yarmouth’s boys’ tennis team, the reigning Class B champion, was 5-0 heading into a key home meet versus Greely Tuesday.

The Clippers girls were 3-3 after a 4-1 win over Freeport and a 4-1 loss to Cape Elizabeth.

Falmouth’s girls were 5-0 following 4-1 wins last week over Gorham and Portland.

Falmouth’s boys fell to 3-2 after a 3-2 loss to Portland.

Freeport’s boys fell to 2-3 after 5-0 losses last week to Yarmouth and Greely.

The Falcons girls dropped to 2-4 after losses to Yarmouth (4-1) and Greely (5-0).

Greely’s boys beat Cape Elizabeth and Freeport by 5-0 scores last week, then fell to 5-3 after a 3-2 loss to 12-time reigning Class C champion Waynflete.

The Rangers girls improved to 6-1 after recent wins over Freeport (5-0) and Waynflete (3-2).

NYA’s beat Lake Region (5-0) and lost to Waynflete (4-1) last week and took a 2-4 mark into Tuesday’s home match versus Mt. Ararat.

The Panthers girls fell to 0-5 after 5-0 losses to Waynflete and Brunswick.

Track

Falmouth joined Cheverus and Waynflete for a meet last week. Falmouth’s boys came in first and the girls were second.

Freeport hosted NYA, Gray-New Gloucester and St. Dom’s last week and the Falcons boys and girls each finished first. The Panthers boys and girls were runners-up.

Greely and Yarmouth competed at Cape Elizabeth. The Rangers boys and girls each were runner-up to the Capers, while the Clippers boys and girls both finished third.
