In his May 8 letter to the editor, “McConnell maintains focus on undercutting democracy,” Richard Dana rightly condemns Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for his recent statement: “One hundred percent of my focus is on standing up to this (Biden) administration. What we have in the United States Senate is total unity from Susan Collins to Ted Cruz in opposition to what the new Biden administration is trying to do to this country.” It is clear that today’s Republican Party has no agenda and no interest in solving the nation’s problems.

I find it hard to believe that Sen. Susan Collins would sign on to such a declaration or would wish to be in the company of Sen. Ted Cruz. She is known for her bipartisanship and for not taking a position on an issue without first knowing the facts and hearing arguments. This is why so many of her constituents – and so many others throughout the country – have so much respect for her.

Sen. Collins needs to speak out (in a letter to the editor?), assert her independence, tell Mr. McConnell to speak for himself and reassure her constituents that she is still the same Susan Collins we have admired for so long.
