CAPE ELIZABETH — Town Manager Matthew Sturgis announced that town personnel are making plans to open Cape Elizabeth Town Hall and the Thomas Memorial Library on June 1.

Sturgis said that the town is looking forward to having people back in town hall at 320 Ocean House Road, as well as back in the library for browsing.

“We are extremely happy to get to this point and start to do that and the numbers seem to be tracking in the right direction,” Sturgis said. “We’re grateful for those who are doing their best to do that. They keep us all safe and healthy.”

Due to the pandemic, both buildings announced they would offer limited access to the public since spring of 2020. Thomas Memorial Library is currently offering curbside pickup Monday through Friday, according to its website.

Masks will be required for people who enter the building, announced the the library. Hours will also be expanded.

According to a written statement from the library, “We will reopen on Tuesday, June 1 with no reservations required. We ask that library visitors utilize the library for no more than 30 minutes at a time to browse the shelves, make their selections, and check them out either at the self-checkout units or with staff at our two public desks.”

The library will continue to offer curbside pickup for people who are still uncomfortable with going inside, said Sturgis.

“Early as we get started, some of the stages will be a little more conservative than our normal approach, such as looking for folks to do more of a grab-and-go, but browsing will be available and as we go through the summer we’ll expand more and more of the services at the library,” Sturgis said.

The same is true for people who are not comfortable going into town hall just yet, or would like to save time by staying at home, Sturgis said.

“We’ll still be happy to help people walk through electronic transactions if they would like to do that,” he said.

Thomas Memorial Library also offers virtual events and weekly Zoom sessions, that can be found at thomasmemoriallibrary.org.
