Dorothea “Dorrie” (Blanchard) Foss

CAPE ELIZABETH – Dorothea Blanchard Foss died on Saturday, May 22, 2021.Born in Concord, N.H., Dec. 9, 1932, the daughter of Francis Gardner Blanchard and Ruth Gillingham Blanchard, Dorrie attended New Hampshire schools, graduating from Gorham High School, Gorham, N.H., class of 1950. Following graduation, she went to Northeastern Business College in Portland. While working at Webber Travel Service in Portland, she met her husband, Clifton Macy Foss, when he went into the office to plan a trip. Dorrie and Clif married in 1957 and moved to Cape Elizabeth where they raised their two children. Their daughter, Angela Ruth Foss, lives in Cambridge, Mass., and their son, Andrew Clifton Foss, lives in Silver Spring, Md., with his partner, Denise Rivoal.Besides being a devoted wife and mother, Dorrie did a variety of community volunteer work. She was past vice president and treasurer of the Junior League of Portland; past advisory service chairman for Greater Portland Landmarks; past president of Victoria Society of Maine (now known as Victoria Mansion); chairman of Victoria Mansion Carriage House Preservation Project; past president and treasurer of the Visiting Board of the Children’s Hospital, Maine Medical Center (MMC); past chairman of the Flower Box Committee, MMC; past trustee, MMC; and corporator of MaineHealth. In 2008, Dorrie received special recognition for 5000 hours of volunteer service at MMC. In addition to the above, she was a past trustee at First Congregational Church, UCC, South Portland. Dorrie’s special interests included historic preservation, antiques, gardening and flower arranging. While volunteering as a designer in the Flower Box at MMC, she was able to use her creative flower arranging skills. Surviving, in addition to her children, are her two brothers, Sheldon G. Blanchard and wife Beverly of Gastonia, N.C. and Dexter F. Blanchard of Willow, Alaska; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, June 10, at Riverside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth. Arrangements are under the direction of Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland.
