BIDDEFORD — Kids are invited to go on a bicycle ride with officers from Biddeford Police Department and young people and staff  from Apex Youth Connection.

The “Bike with a Cop” ride will take place on the Eastern Trail on Saturday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to noon. Riders need to register to take part in the free event, and do so at by going to the “Events” page of the Apex Youth Connection website, www.apexyouthconnection.org.

Biddeford officers will join participants for the bike ride as a way to connect with the community in a positive and casual setting.

“The idea was to create an opportunity to meet community members in a fun way, and what’s better than getting out on a nice day and riding bikes?” said Community Oriented Police and Engagement Officer Justin Lavertue, an organizer of the event.

The event will also give riders the chance to learn about the array of Apex Youth Connection programs.

Lavertue said the Police Department partnered with Apex to provide an opportunity for families to be exposed to community resources that could benefit Biddeford’s youth with life skills and opportunities.

“Apex is so honored to partner with our friends at BPD,” said Melissa Cilley, Apex Youth Connection executive director. “It is so important that we all work together to make this great community even stronger. Events like this one help us reach that goal”

Participants must bring their own bike and helmet. The ride will start and end at 1 Medical Center Drive in Biddeford. Parking is available at Southern Maine Health Care.

Lavertue said the event is geared toward children capable of riding a bicycle on their own, but adults won’t be turned away.
