The deadline to apply for tax relief programs in Scarborough has been extended to June 14, including applications for a Homestead Exemption, Veteran’s Exemption and Blind Person’s Exemption.

The state Homestead Exemption is for property owners whose primary residence has been in Maine for at least 12 months. Those eligible will see a $25,000 reduction in their property’s taxable value, but the actual impact on a tax bill depends on the current tax rate. Those who have already applied for the program do not need to apply again for the same property.

The state Veteran’s Exemption is applicable to owners of property who meet one of the following criteria: are 62 or older and served during a recognized war period; receives 100% disability from the VA; is a paraplegic veteran, or the surviving spouse, minor child, or widowed parent of a veteran.

Applications are accepted online at https://bit.ly/3ci4Ft0 or in person at the Scarborough Municipal Building, 259 U.S. Route One.
