A man was arrested on gun and assault charges Saturday after a search in Portland involving police dogs and officers on foot.

Michael Fonseca, 41, of Portland was charged with domestic violence assault and being a felon in possession of a firearm, said Lt. Robert Doherty of the Portland police. He was arrested in the area of Brighton Avenue and Devonshire Street, near some railroad tracks, around 2 p.m.

Doherty said police had reason to believe that Fonseca  could be armed and dangerous and began looking for him in the late morning. He said the incident Fonseca was charged with happened sometime before Saturday. He did not have a gun when he was arrested, Doherty said. Fonseca was taken to the Cumberland County Jail following his arrest.
