The Hallowell Police Department responded to a call at about 7 p.m. Saturday to check on a person on Water Street, but the call escalated quickly into a standoff between an individual and officers, according to officials.

Hallowell police posted on Facebook that the individual posed a risk of being “a danger to himself and possibly others,” and a barrier was constructed on Water Street and Second Street to isolate the issue.

Police said no shots were fired.

The Maine State Police and Hallowell Fire Department were called in to assist, according to reports.

Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said the state police tactical and crisis negotiation teams also assisted at the scene.

The suspect refused to come out so the state police took over efforts to de-escalate the situation, according to Hallowell police.

As of Sunday morning, the issue had been resolved and the individual had been taken to a hospital.
