A Naples man died Saturday morning when his snowmobile veered off the trail and hit trees in Harrison.

Daniel J. Hammond, 46, was riding with a group of three friends on a snowmobile trail in Harrison at 10:30 a.m. when the group stopped to cross the Cape Monday Road, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Hammond crossed the road with a friend behind him and, after crossing the road, Hammond traveled a short distance up the trail and crashed into trees.

Initially, Hammond was conscious after the impact, but succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the crash 20 minutes later, according to DIF&W. Hammond wore a helmet while driving his 2022 Ski-Doo 850 Back Country, the department said.

The Maine Warden Service is investigating the crash. The Harrison Fire Department, United Ambulance and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Warden Service at the crash site. Hammond was to be examined by the state medical examiner  at Halls Funeral Home in Casco.
