The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland has received more than $45,000 in the Betty White Challenge as of Jan. 24

The social media-fueled fundraising campaign asked donors to contribute to animal shelters and other nonprofit animal rescue groups on Jan. 17 in honor of what would have been White’s 100th birthday. White, an iconic television actress who died Dec. 31, was a lifelong advocate for animal rights.

The challenge had raised $25,000 for the regional shelter located in Westbrook as of Jan. 17, but since then brought in more than $20,000 more, according to the ARLGP.

Nationwide, the challenge raised nearly $13 million for animal organizations, according to  Variety Magazine.
