Sara “Sally” Kennedy Boone (Middendorf) Lofving

PORTLAND – Sara “Sally” Kennedy Boone (Middendorf) Lofving, 92, of Portland, died comfortably on Jan. 20, 2022.

Sally was born Jan. 8, 1930, in Baltimore, Md., to Henry and Sarah Middendorf.

After her graduation in 1951 from Mt. Holyoke College with a degree in English Literature, she worked as an editor for many years at Oxford, Knopf, and Pergamon Press. She was a resident of Katonah, N.Y., Swans Island, and South Portland.

Sally was a member of the Colonial Dames, and she served for many years as a docent at the Portland Museum of Art. She led book clubs in Portland and Swans Island.

Sally was always cheerful and lived an interesting life. The only fish she ever caught was a 10-foot-long sail fish off the coast of Acapulco. She published one poem and that was in The New Yorker. In the 1950s She lived on McDougal Street in “The Village” in New York City. In the 1960s She attended one rock concert – Jimi Hendrix in New York.

Sally loved cats, reading, current events, flowers, teddy bears, gnomes, crispy toast, and oatmeal raison cookies.

Sally was predeceased by her husband, Iver Lofving; and by their son, Tore Lofving.

Sally is survived by her children Iver Lofving, Per Lofving, and Camilla Lofving; her grandchildren Lila, Alex, Nikita, and Nikolai; and her great-grandchild, Louis; as well as her brothers J. William Middendorf, Ward Paine, Lincoln Paine, and Michael Paine.

A memorial service and interment are planned for Swans Island at a future date.
