Westbrook officials will offer assistance to employees of Shaw’s at Westbrook Crossing, which will close on or before Feb. 26.

The company announced Jan. 21 the closure of the Main Street supermarket and said its goal is to relocate “as many associates as possible” to other Shaw’s locations.

Communications Manager Teresa Edington would not disclose the number of employees at the store or how many would be transferred to other stores.

“We are disappointed to see them go, but we are glad to hear that they are willing to relocate all of the different employees to other places in their business,” Mayor Mike Foley told the American Journal Monday.

The city will help those employees looking for other jobs, said Development Director Dan Stevenson.

“We are really cognizant of people losing their jobs, and it’s important for us to know how many people are still going to have work and what does that mean for the employees,” Stevenson said. “It’s not as easy as ‘yeah, they are closing.’ It affects lives. The more we know about that, the more we can get the message out.”

He and Foley said they are optimistic another business will move into the space located next to the Kohl’s store and across the street from Rock Row.

Stevenson said he has already received calls from companies interested in the “highly desirable” location, which could remain a large storefront space or possibly be divided up for smaller businesses.
