A pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a pickup truck on Riverside Street in Portland early Tuesday morning, police said.

The incident occurred near 557 Riverside St. shortly before 3 a.m., police said in a statement.

The man who was killed was not identified, and investigators were working to confirm his identity and notify relatives.

The truck was driven by a 24-year-old Portland resident whose name was not immediately released. There were no charges filed, but the case remains under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call Portland police at 874-8532 or 874-8575.

The crash marked the third time in just over two weeks that a vehicle has struck a pedestrian in the city.

On Jan. 18, a pedestrian was injured by a hit-and-run driver near the intersection of Forest Avenue and Bedford Street, a few steps from the University of Southern Maine library. Police continue to investigate that crash.

Then on Jan. 22, a 65-year-old Portland man was seriously injured when he was struck at 1335 Congress St. by a vehicle driven by a 23-year-old Portland resident.

Statewide, 2021 was an unusually deadly year for pedestrians. Twenty people were struck and killed by vehicles, equaling the number killed in 2017 and ranking it among the most deadly years in two decades.
