AUGUSTA — Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for the towns of Scarborough and Gorham has been released. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation upgrades and maintenance projects.

“I’m excited to share the upcoming projects that will be taking place in our community during 2022,” said Sen. Stacy Brenner, D-Scarborough. “I’d like to give a special thanks to the men and women at the Maine Department of Transportation who go to work every day to make sure our roadways, bridges and trails are accessible and safe to use for all.”

According to the MDOT, the work plan covers approximately $3.17 billion worth of construction and maintenance, which includes 2,316 work items. The three-year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 115 miles of highway construction and rehabilitation; 1,057 miles of pavement preservation; 2,162 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 353 safety and spot improvements; and 235 bridge projects.

The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for some communities in Senate District 30 in 2022:

Light Capital Paving

• In Scarborough, light capital paving on Beech Ridge Road beginning at Payne Road and extending north 1.87 miles.

• In Scarborough, light capital paving on Spurwink Road beginning .06 of a mile south of Acorn Lane and extending south 1.12 miles.

Highway Paving/Rehabilitation

• In Buxton, Gorham and Scarborough, highway paving on County Road beginning at South Street and extending southwest 4.79 miles to Route 4.

• In Scarborough, highway paving on Highland Avenue beginning at Black Point Road and extending east 0.96 of a mile to Chamberland Road.

• In Scarborough, highway paving on Black Point Road beginning at Roundabout Lane and extending south 1.01 miles.

• In Scarborough, highway paving on Broadturn Road beginning 0.32 of a mile southeast of Joss Hill Road and extending southeast 1.56 miles.

• In Scarborough, highway construction and rehabilitation on Gorham Road beginning Maple Avenue and extending north 0.48 of a mile to Ridgeway Road.

Highway Safety and Spot Improvements

• In Scarborough, highway safety and spot improvements on Route 1 beginning 0.39 of a mile northeast of Harlow Street and extending northeast 1.20 miles, including bridges (#3573, #2240).

• In Scarborough, highway safety and spot improvements on Pine Point Road, beginning at Primrose Lane and extending northwest 0.73 of a mile. Including bridge (#3712).

Pedestrian/Bicyclist improvements

• In Gorham, road safety improvements in various locations, including South Street, New Portland Road and State Street

• In Scarborough, Eastern Trail extension beginning at Wainwright Field in South Portland and extending south 0.8 of a mile to Pleasant Hill Road in Scarborough.

• In Scarborough, Eastern Trail bicycle and pedestrian connection beginning at Nonesuch River and extending 0.6 of a mile to Pleasant Hill Road.

Railroad Crossing Safety

• In Scarborough, railroad crossing signal improvements on Winnocks Neck Road and located .2 miles southeast of Orchard Hill Road

Studies

• In Gorham, feasibility study for future use of the Mountain Division rail line.
