While it’s a pity that there will be some losses in the lobster business because of the federal restrictions announced last fall, other industries also suffer financial burdens when new restrictions pop up.
Take the construction industry: New Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules can inflict damage on the bottom line. Restaurants take a hit when new health department mandates take effect.
And so it goes. My point is that Maine lobstermen, now being considered for a $30 million bonus, aren’t alone in their request for relief.
But taxpayers should not be asked to shoulder the financial burdens of certain businesses caused by rules that are, for the most part, for the public good.
