The Maine Young Birders Club is seeking two young birders to participate in birding programs for teens on Hog Island and Borestone Mountain in the summer of 2022. The club and York County Audubon are offering the scholarships. Applications and complete details are available at www.yorkcountyaudubon.org/scholarships. Applications are due by March 15. Applicants must be 14-17 years old to attend.

The first program is titled Coastal Maine Bird Studies for Teens and the session will run from June 19-24. The six-day, five-night program on Hog Island allows young birders to work with some of the country’s best-known birders and ornithologists on field identification, bird ecology and conservation. Thanks to support from Friends of Hog Island, the scholarship covers 100 percent of the recipient’s cost to attend.

The second program is titled Mountains to Sea Birding for Teens and the session will run from June 26-July 1. The five-night program will cover boreal to coastal bird species in Maine. Teens will spend part of the week at Maine Audubon’s Borestone Mountain Sanctuary looking for northern Maine bird species.

The remaining part of the week, teens will stay on Hog Island and explore the coast for shorebirds, nesting species and puffins. Program details and descriptions are available at https://hogisland.audubon.org/programs/mountains-sea-birding-teens. The scholarship covers 80 percent of the recipient’s cost to attend. Applicants will cover the remaining 20 percent.

The Maine Young Birders Club provides a safe environment for youth in Maine to experience the wonder of birds and nature with other teens through birding-related events and activities and to promote engagement with our natural world by empowering young Maine residents to study and enjoy birds and birding. University of Maine announces fall 2021 dean’s list

The University of Maine recognized 3,101 students for achieving dean’s list honors in the fall 2021 semester. Of the students who made the dean’s list, 2,024 are from Maine, 1,009 are from 39 other states and 68 are from 25 countries other than the U.S.

Museum hosts mental health discussion series

The Brick Store Museum is continuing its focus on mental health using its historic archives in its Winter Discussion Series sponsored by the Maine Humanities Council. Archival letters and diaries written by historic citizens will be used to highlight the importance of mental health. The museum is partnering with the Maine Humanities Council to present this unique discussion series, running one Thursday a month between March and June.

Registration is free and open to the public, though limited to 15.

The series of virtual discussions (via Zoom) will be grounded in letters and journals from the Brick Store Museum’s collection, plus two published books, “Seek You: A Journey Through American Loneliness” by Kristin Radtke and “Wait: Poems from the Pandemic” by 55 Maine poets.

Each session will take place at 6 p.m. and are scheduled for March 10, April 14, May 12 and June 9. The sessions will feature archival texts as well as a companion text, with discussion led by trained facilitator Dr. Lacey Sparks, assistant professor of history at the University of Southern Maine.

Astronomical society schedules March meeting

The Astronomical Society of Northern New England will hold its monthly meeting 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 4 at The

New School, 38 York St., Kennebunk. A business meeting, also open to the public, commences at 7 p.m.

The March meeting agenda includes: Bernie Reim’s What’s Up for the Month and Astro Shorts, where attendees and

members share questions, activities, news and observations. The Astro Shorts meetings give way to many discussions.

The Astronomical Society of Northern New England is a local association of amateur astronomers that meets monthly at The New School.  Meetings are on the first Friday of each month. All those interested in astronomy are welcome, from stargazers and hobbyists, to serious observers, astrophotographers, and those interested in astronomical theory. The general public is also invited and welcome.

The society also hosts Star Parties at its own Talmage Observatory at Starfield on Route 35 in West Kennebunk.
