OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Business owner and former Maine legislator Sharri MacDonald has announced her candidacy for the Republican nomination for Senate District 31 in the June primary.

The Senate district includes Old Orchard Beach, Saco, and Buxton.

MacDonald, who served a term in the Maine House of Representative 1012 to 2014, is the owner of MacDonald’s Garage & Beach Convenience.

“Every day I see, hear about, and directly deal with the many issues Mainers are facing right now as they try to support their families,” she said in a news release. “We need to find real solutions that will help people — Mainers need reasonable, common-sense approaches from their elected officials, and they need less partisan fighting. I’m running for State Senate to do what I’ve always done — work hard, work with anyone regardless of their party affiliation, and get things done to really help my friends, neighbors, and community make sure their basic needs are met.”

MacDonald works daily with her family at MacDonald’s Garage & Beach Convenience in Old Orchard Beach and is one of the founders and a driving force of OOB365, helping to bring large events into the community, with a focus on showcasing Old Orchard Beach in the off-season, the news release stated.

MacDonald volunteers with Saco Bay Sunset Rotary and is spearheading the build of a community room-teen center at Sweetser in Saco, “with the intent to bring awareness to the foster and adoptive cases in Maine,” she said in the news release.

During her term in the Legislature, Macdonald was a member of the State and Local Government Committee.

The seat is currently held by Sen. Donna Bailey, who is seeking re-election.
