AUGUSTA — Eighth-seeded Waynflete held No. 1 Winthrop to seven points in the first half and stunned the Ramblers 44-26 in a Class C South boys’ basketball quarterfinal Monday night at the Augusta Civic Center.

The teams combined for just seven points in the first quarter, but Waynflete (10-9) used a 17-4 edge in the second quarter to open a 21-7 halftime lead.

Matt Adey led Waynflete with 10 points. Andrew Foster scored 15 for Winthrop (15-5).

DIRIGO 53, CARRABEC 43: Trenton Hutchinson scored 24 points, Charlie Houghton added 15, and the third-seeded Cougars (15-5) advanced to the Class C South semifinals with a victory over the sixth-seeded Cobras (9-11) in Augusta.

Hutchinson and Houghton led a quick burst early in the fourth quarter that helped Dirigo pull away. A 3-pointer by Houghton gave the Cougars a 42-33 lead. Hutchinson followed with a basket, then made a 3-pointer after a blocked shot and outlet pass by Houghton.

Luke Carey scored 14 points for Carrabec.

MONMOUTH ACADEMY 50, ST. DOM’S 47: Manny Calder scored 15 points, Hayden Fletcher was 6 for 6 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and the fifth-seeded Mustangs (12-4) held off the No. 4 Saints (14-6) in a Class C South quarterfinal in Augusta.

Fletcher and Sam Calder each finished with 11 points for Monmouth.

Taylor Varney sank four of his six 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with 20 points, while Gabe Carey scored 18 for St. Dom’s.

PINE TREE ACADEMY 58, ISLESBORO 47: Alden Thacker scored 30 points to lead the sixth-seeded Breakers (8-11) to a victory over third-seeded Islesboro (7-7) in a Class D South quarterfinal Monday in Augusta.

Pine Tree took control with a 14-0 run in the second quarter, then held off a late comeback bid by the Eagles, who cut an 18-point deficit to seven with 11 straight points in the fourth quarter.

Ben Ndamukunda added 14 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out.

Charlie Jagger paced Islesboro with 13 points. Blake Zlotkowski had 11.

VALLEY 62, RANGELEY 27: Henry Louis and Ryon West combined for 17 points during a 27-7 run in the third quarter as the second-seeded Cavaliers (11-4) pulled away from the seventh-seeded Lakers (5-11) in a Class D South quarterfinal at the Augusta Civic Center.

Valley turned a 26-17 halftime lead into a 53-24 advantage after three quarters. The Cavaliers next face No. 6 Pine Tree Academy on Wednesday morning.

Louis finished with 17 points, Fisher Tewksbury tossed in 16 and West ended up with 15.

Trevor Dolbier led Rangeley with 13 points.

SCHENCK 42, VAN BUREN 41: The sixth-seeded Wolverines (10-10) rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to beat the third-seeded Crusaders (11-7) in a Class D North quarterfinal at Bangor’s Cross Insurance Center.

Kaden Hannan led Schenck with 13 points. Ryan Ingalls added nine and Gabe Whitehouse and Mason McDunnah each scored eight.

Van Buren was paced by Blake Martin with 16 points and Henry Hebert with 15.

SOUTHERN AROOSTOOK 81, KATAHDIN 39: The second-seeded Warriors (17-1) built a 43-9 halftime lead and cruised into the Class D North semifinals with an easy victory over the No. 7 Cougars (10-10) in Bangor.

Dylan Burpee and Hunter Burpee paced Southern Aroostook with 21 and 18 points, respectively. Graham Siltz scored 13 and Camden Porter had 11.

Grady Ritchie led Katahdin with 12 points.

WISDOM 46, BANGOR CHRISTIAN 44: A basket by freshman Camden Pelletier capped Wisdom’s comeback from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit as the fourth-seeded Pioneers (13-5) knocked off the fifth-seeded Patriots (11-7) in a Class D North quarterfinal in Bangor.

Carter Pelletier fueled the rally, scoring 10 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter. Dominique Gendreau added 11 points and Kaden Daigle had 10 for Wisdom.

Bangor Christian was paced by Conrad Straubel with 15 points. Jason Libby scored 13 points and Jalen Reed finished with 10.

MACHIAS 85, JONESPORT-BEALS 40: Kashman Feeney and Shane Feeney paced a balanced attack with 20 and 18 points, respectively, as the top-seeded Bulldogs (16-0) routed the No. 8 Royals (9-11) in a Class D North quarterfinal in Bangor.

Kyle Anderson added 13 points and Ethan Foss scored 11.

Damon Beal accounted for the bulk of Jonesport-Beals’ offense with 23 points.

HOCKEY

THORNTON ACADEMY 6, LEWISTON 0: Evan Beaudette, Jacob Marcotte and Alex St. John tallied two goals apiece for the Golden Trojans (11-5) in a win over the Blue Devils (8-10) at The Colisee in Lewiston.

Kyle LeSieur contributed three assists, and Heath McLean had two assists. Gage Tarbox-Belanger made 19 saves for the shutout.
