SOUTH CHINA — Two men riding a utility terrain vehicle at the south end of China Lake on Thursday afternoon went into the water when the vehicle hit thin ice, according to a state official.
Maine Game Warden Steve Couture responded to the incident, involving Thomas Colwell, 64, and Christopher Colwell, 37, of South China, according to Mark Latti, spokesman for the state Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife. The incident happened in an area of China Lake near Fire Road 61.
The driver, Thomas Colwell, who owns the 2013 Polaris UTV, suffered a small cut to his forehead, Latti said Thursday night in an email. He was treated at the scene and did not need to be taken to a hospital, according to Latti.
“They were traveling on the lake with their UTV and traveled too close to the thin ice near the edge of the lake,” Latti said.
Neither man was wearing a helmet, he said.
A UTV is different than an all-terrain vehicle in that it allows for side-by-side riding whereas an ATV is for one rider. The UTV must be removed from China Lake, according to Latti.
