I sympathize with Robert Kammann’s complaint (“Letter to the editor: Inflation comes roaring back under Joe Biden,” Feb. 20, Page D3) about our current inflation. Just what we need after two years of the COVID pandemic.

I would indicate, however, that the problems generated by the pandemic are the cause for the inflation – the fault is not with the Democratic Party. Europe is having exactly the same problem, at a similar inflationary rate. I’m quite sure President Biden and the Democrats have very little influence on Europe’s economy.

Moreover, Biden is working with Congress to overhaul our supply lines and system. So much of what we buy comes from another part of the world that interruptions in the transportation of those items inevitably cause prices to rise.

The phrase “tax and spend Democrats” is often used as a smear. However, covering spending with adequate taxation is a good thing. It’s the opposite – insufficient income compared to spending – that causes inflation, as in Donald Trump’s tax cut for corporations without a corresponding decrease in spending.
