KENNEBUNKPORT – The board of selectmen has been meeting online for the past several months, but as COVID-19 case counts drop, board members are thinking they might resume in-person sessions in the spring.

“The numbers have been going down,” and case volumes are improving, Town Manager Laurie Smith told the board Feb. 24.

Smith said Kennebunkport Public Health has tested just one member of the public in the past three weeks – a dramatic change from a dozen people a day at one point. “Things seem to be going in the right direction,” she said.

She said there has been talk of mask mandates in schools being reduced in March and other initiatives and so initiated the question.

“I feel like the time is coming, around the corner,” Smith said. “I don’t know how big the corner is.”

Smith suggested the board stay remote for upcoming March budget meetings, which typically include several people besides selectmen.

“Stay virtual through the budget process and go back live, perhaps in April, depending on how things progress,” said  selectman Ed Hutchins.

“I agree,” said selectman Allen Daggett.

“We are going in the right direction,” said Hutchins.

“We’ll keep an eye on things, but I am thinking in April sometime,” said Smith.
