Austin Morgan’s goal 4:10 into the second overtime gave the University of New England a 3-2 comeback victory over Plymouth State in the first round of the NCAA Division III men’s hockey tournament Saturday night in Biddeford.
Morgan got control of the puck just inside his own blue line, got around a defenseman as he entered the offensive zone and sent a backhander past Plymouth State goalie Kalle Andersson, who finished with 44 saves.
UNE (22-3-1) advances to play at Utica in the quarterfinals next Saturday. It was a school-record 12th straight win for the Nor’easters, who also set a program record for victories in a season.
UNE fell behind 2-0 in the first period. Aaron Aragon started the comeback with a power-play goal early in the second, and Collin Heinold tied it 7:30 into the third.
WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK
NCAA DIVISION I CHAMPIONSHIPS: Former Westbrook High track star Nyagoa Bayak earned All-America honors Saturday with a fourth-place finish in the high jump at the NCAA Division I indoor championships in Birmingham, Alabama.
Bayak, a sophomore at Louisiana State, set a personal best by clearing 6 feet, 1 1/4 inch on her third attempt. That mark ties her for third place in LSU history.
Lamara Distin of Texas A&M won with a height of 6-3 1/2.
NCAA DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIPS: Jaidyn Appel, a graduate of Portland High School, won the NCAA Division III title in the high jump in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Appel, a junior at Tufts University, set a personal best with her winning jump of 5 feet, 9 1/4 inches. She was successful on her first six jumps before needing three tries to clear the winning height. Breya Christopher of Wartburg finished second with a jump of 5-8.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
PLATTSBURGH 3, COLBY 2: Annie Katonka scored in overtime as the Cardinals (25-2-1) eliminated the Mules (16-6-1) in the first-round of the NCAA Division III tournament in Plattsburgh, New York.
Katonka gave Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead in the first period and Sara Krauseneck made it 2-0 in the second. Meg Rittenhouse scored on the power play to get Colby within one with 1:51 left in the second, then Lexi Cafiero tied it 7:43 into the third.
Chloe Beaubien stopped 28 shots for Plattsburgh, which advances to the semifinals to Gustavus Adolphus. Nina Prunster had 47 saves for Colby.
MEN’S LACROSSE
TRINITY 13, BATES 6: William Puccio scored four goals as the Bantams (1-1, 1-1 NESCAC) beat the Bobcats (0-4, 0-2) in Lewiston.
Jack Cahill and Ryan Werner both had two goals and an assist for Trinity. Connor McCulloch added two goals, while Cullen Wolf had a goal and three assists.
Walter Braun, Jackson Sell, Jake Johnson, Jack Lousararian, Will Masterson and Malcolm Klingbeil scored for Bates.
UMASS BOSTON 19, U. of NEW ENGLAND 7: Darragh Fahey had five goals and an assists as the Beacons (4-0) beat the Nor’easters (3-4) in Boston.
Gavid Admirand and Greg Wolff each added three goals and an assist for UMass Boston.
Colin Watt had two goals and an assist, while Alden Balboni added a goal and two assists for UNE.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
HAMILTON 9, BOWDOIN 8: Olivia Seymour scored with 9:17 left to lift the Continentals (2-0, 2-0 NESCAC) to a win over the Polar Bears (1-2, 0-2) in Brunswick.
Bowdoin rallied from two down to tie the game with a goal by Colleen McAloon in the third and Sophia Sudano in the fourth.
Lauren Hamilton, Clarissa Hurley and Seymour all had two goals for Hamilton. Fiona Bundy, Lauren Burke and Sudano each scored twice for Bowdoin.
SOUTHERN MAINE 15, HUSSON 3: Rachel Shanks had five goals and two assists as the Huskies (3-2) handled the Eagles (0-2) in Gorham.
Kiaya Gatchell had three goals and an assist for USM. Kate Colvin, Jennifer Darasz and Evelyn Hinkley each scored twice.
Devyn Veits had two goals for Husson. Emma Begin and Emily Godfrey combined for 12 saves.
SOFTBALL
NEW MEXICO 10, MAINE 2: The Lobos (18-6) scored six runs in the sixth inning to pull away and beat the Black Bears (2-10) in St. George, Utah.
Andrea Howard had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run for New Mexico. Peyton Robinson had four hits.
Kyrah Dailey had a double and drove in a pair of runs for Maine.
