A woman from Maine was killed Monday afternoon when she crashed her snowmobile into trees while riding a trail in Lower Cupsuptic Township.

The victim was identified as Marjorie Davan, 52, of Oquossoc, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife spokesman Mark Latti said. Lower Cupsuptic Township is located northwest of Rangeley in Oxford County.

Davan was operating her 2016 Polaris Pro S 600 snowmobile with a group of three other friends around 12:25 p.m. when she failed to negotiate a left hand turn in the trail, Latti said. She crashed into several small trees before being thrown from the sled.

There were no witnesses to the crash, but the last member of the group she was riding with came upon her sled. She was unresponsive, which led the rider to call 911 and to administer CPR. Davan had died by the time NorthStar Ambulance arrived at the crash scene.

The Maine Warden Service said it was likely Davan was traveling too fast when she entered the turn. She was wearing a helmet, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. She was transported to Wiles Funeral Home in Farmington.
