The federal grant, announced late Monday, will buy four new shuttle buses for the Breez service between Portland and communities north of the city.

“Upgrading the Breez buses will improve the passenger experience and is another step toward making transit a wise choice for travel along the busy I-295/Route 1 corridor between Brunswick and Portland,” said Metro Board President Hope Cahan in a statement.

A grant from the Federal Transit Administration will cover 85 percent of the cost to replace existing buses with bigger models that offer more passenger seats, room for bicycles and the ability to run on all of Metro’s bus routes.

The Breez service connects Portland with stops in Brunswick, Freeport and Yarmouth.
