TRACK AND FIELD

Allyson Felix won her 19th and final medal in the world championships Friday night – a bronze she took after running the second leg for the U.S. in the 1,600-meter mixed relay that’s been touted as the last major race of the 36-year-old’s career.

Felix was entered only in the mixed relay in Eugene, Oregon, after failing to qualify for the worlds in an individual race. The 19th medal over her 10 trips to the championships extends the record she already held. Adding to her 11 medals from the Olympics – a record for any American in track and field – she now has an even 30 from her sport’s two biggest events.

OLYMPICS: Jim Thorpe has been reinstated as the sole winner of the 1912 Olympic pentathlon and decathlon in Stockholm – nearly 110 years after being stripped of those gold medals for violations of strict amateurism rules of the time.

The International Olympic Committee announced the change Friday on the 110th anniversary of Thorpe winning the decathlon and later being proclaimed by King Gustav V of Sweden as “the greatest athlete in the world.”

Thorpe, a Native American, returned to a ticker-tape parade in New York, but months later it was discovered he had been paid to play minor league baseball over two summers, an infringement of the Olympic amateurism rules. He was stripped of his gold medals in what was described as the first major international sports scandal.

Sanford took the lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by David Bermudez and an RBI double by Devan Bade. Jake Rainess tripled with two runners on base in the fifth.

In the opener, Matthew Sapienza allowed just two hits in five scoreless innings, leading the Mainers to a 2-1 win.

Kevin Skagerlind drove in a run for Sanford with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Aiden Kane made it 2-0 with an RBI single in the fifth.

TOUR DE FRANCE: Former world champion Mads Pedersen attacked from the start, then delivered in style on the finish line to claim his first stage win at the Tour de France.

After spending the day at the front, the one-day classic specialist attacked from a group of six riders with less than eight miles remaining and dropped three rivals on the road leading into Saint-Etienne. He perfectly timed his final move about 250 meters from the finish to leave his two remaining opponents in his wake with a powerful burst of speed.

Following two brutal days of racing in the Alps, Jonas Vingegaard enjoyed a quiet day in the pack, well protected by his Jumbo-Visma teammates, as he maintained a lead of two minutes, 22 seconds over two-time defending champion Tadej Pogacar.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Jonquel Jones scored 21 points and the Connecticut Sun never trailed in a 93-68 victory over the Atlanta Dream in College Park, Georgia.

Matilda Castren and Kelly Tan were second after a 67.

SOCCER

ENGLAND: Auston Trusty was loaned to second-tier Birmingham City from Arsenal for the 2022-23 season before the 23-year-old defender played his first game for the Gunners.

Trusty, a member of the U.S. team at the 2017 Under-20 World Cup, transferred from Colorado of Major League Soccer to Arsenal in January, and then was loaned back to the Rapids and played 16 MLS matches this season. Both Arsenal and Colorado are owned by Stan Kroenke.

• Manchester United signed Denmark playmaker Christian Eriksen to a three-year contract.

Eriksen, 30, played for Brentford in the second half of last season, joining the London club almost eight months after collapsing from cardiac arrest at the European Championship.

RUSSIA BAN: Russia remains barred from international soccer competitions, including the Champions League, after the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected appeals by the national soccer federation and four clubs.

CAS upheld decisions by UEFA and FIFA that excluded Russian national teams and clubs following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
