The Maine Department of Environmental Protection said in its Sunday forecast that the air quality for ozone is unhealthy for sensitive groups of people in certain regions of the state, but should improve by Monday.
Most of Maine’s south coast and midcoast regions were experiencing unhealthy levels of ozone Sunday, stretching from Kittery to higher elevations in Acadia National Park, according to the DEP. Downeast Maine as well as interior sections closest to the coast were experiencing moderate levels of ozone. The DEP’s air quality alert will remain in effect through 11 p.m.
High ozone levels can negatively impact people with heart or lung disease, the elderly, teenagers and children. That segment of the population should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.
While it’s OK to be outside, people should take more breaks and do less intense activities. Symptoms to be mindful of include coughing or shortness of breath. Sunday’s ozone levels in other parts of the state were good or moderate, the DEP said.
Monday’s forecast is calling for improved air quality for most of Maine, except for Acadia National Park where ozone levels will be moderate.
