My wife and I moved to South Bristol from Florida a year ago, after living in New York, Los Angeles and Boston and on Cape Cod. When our daughter moved to Portland, we rediscovered Maine’s beauty, laidback lifestyle, and – under Gov. Mills – refreshingly sane approach to politics and policy.

While Florida’s governor opposed steps to contain the pandemic, Mills’ policies scored highest in the nation (with Hawaii). Mills has improved health care access, expanded Medicaid, signed prescription drug reform for seniors and the disabled, protected women’s reproductive services, increased opioid addiction services and grown Maine’s health care workforce. She strongly supports a woman’s right to choose her own medical care for her body.

The Press Herald quoted Paul LePage when governor, that he’d go to jail rather than support expanded MaineCare; an op-ed writer described his time in office as a “state of perpetual crisis,” impeding health care, housing, education and renewable energy. The push by politicians to bring us back to when we all had less opportunity, freedom and peace of mind is not in anyone’s interest – not here and not in America.

Janet Mills has helped move Maine into the forefront of states with policies good for all the people. We find this inspiring, coming from elsewhere. People young and old are moving here from around the country and the world for the natural beauty, good food and openness to diversity. Mills believes strongly in the people of Maine – their rights, freedoms and ability to live “life the way it should be.” She deserves our support and our vote.
